First, the agency must adopt, by December 15, a new rule requiring treatment and monitoring for suppliers drawing from surface waters. This is to prevent Cryptosporidium and other parasites from contaminating tap water. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Cryptosporidium is one of the most common causes of waterborne disease in the United States. In 1993, high Cryptosporidium levels in Milwaukee's drinking water supply sickened more than 400,000 residents. More recently, several smaller outbreaks have sickened hundreds of people.

Second, EPA agreed to adopt a rule limiting the acceptable level of toxins created by the drinking water disinfection process itself. Disinfection is necessary to remove bacteria and pathogens from water supplies, but without proper precautions it leaves behind byproducts that can cause cancer, and, potentially, miscarriages and birth defects.

Finally, EPA agreed to publish a rule no later than August 2006 requiring systems using groundwater to disinfect it when necessary.

"Americans will finally have the health protections that Congress told EPA to provide years ago," said Earth justice attorney Jennifer Chavez. "This agreement will guarantee that the agency sets the necessary standards for drinking water that will reduce illnesses and protect public health."

After several serious outbreaks of waterborne diseases in U.S. cities, Congress amended the Safe Drinking Water Act in 1996 to, as EPA has stated, "provide strengthened protections to ensure that American families have clean, safe tap water." The amendments required EPA to adopt regulations to reduce microbial pathogens within a specific time frame, but the deadline for a number of the final regulations has come and gone. For example, the final rule for treating surface water sources was supposed to have been completed by 2000.

EPA estimates its surface water treatment rule alone would prevent more than a million illnesses and as many as 141 deaths annually. The agency estimates its rule for toxic disinfection byproducts would prevent hundreds from dying from bladder cancer, would reduce the incidence of other cancers, and could cut the number of miscarriages from 4,700 to 1,100 a year.
"Every year that EPA delayed on these rules, Americans' health was at risk from exposure to these parasites and toxic chemicals," said Dr. Bob Gould, a physician and president of SF Bay Area Physicians for Social Responsibility.
"We are very pleased to hear that the agency will finally begin adopting rules that will protect our drinking water supplies, and we hope the agency will make good on its promise this time."

LG Ranks No. 1 in Customer Satisfaction With Washing Machines, Samsung Ranks No. 1 With Dryers

As a former sales consultant for SEARS. Among washing machine manufacturers, LG ranks highest in customer satisfaction for a third consecutive year, while Samsung ranks highest among clothes dryer manufacturers, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Laundry Appliances Study.

The study measures customer satisfaction with clothes washers and dryers based on performance in six factors: ease of use; features (such as the number of settings available and appliance capacity); performance (including energy efficiency, noise level and how well the appliance functions); styling and feel; warranty; and value.

For a third consecutive year, LG ranks highest in satisfying customers with clothes washers. Achieving a score of 831 on a 1,000-point scale, LG performs well in four of six factors: performance; features; ease of use; and styling. Following LG closely in the rankings is Samsung (829), which performs well across all factors. Kenmore Elite ranks third (819), performing well in the ease of use and features factors.

Samsung ranks highest in customer satisfaction with clothes dryers with a score of 833, performing well in the performance and warranty factors. LG achieves a score of 829 and follows Samsung in the rankings, performing well in ease of use; styling and feel; and features. Kenmore Elite follows both Samsung and LG in the rankings with a score of 815.

The study finds that while effective cleaning or drying performance is the most important driver of overall satisfaction, energy efficiency is also critical to the majority of consumers. The percentage of consumers who purchased high-efficiency washing machines -- which use less water, energy and detergent than traditional washers -- has increased to 60 percent in 2008, compared with 53 percent in 2007. In addition, approximately two-thirds of respondents report that their new laundry appliance is Energy Star certified.

The study also found that:

• Laundry appliance owners cite capacity and price as the two most important considerations in selecting a washer or dryer.
• Owners report experiencing very few problems with their laundry appliances. Approximately 9 percent of washing machine owners and 6 percent of dryer owners say they experienced a problem.
• One in four laundry appliance owners (26% for washers and 23% for dryers) say they purchased an extended warranty or supplemental service agreement.
The 2008 Laundry Appliances Study is based on responses from more than 3,300 consumers who purchased clothes washers and more than 3,600 consumers who purchased clothes dryers from a retail store, their new-home builder, or received one through other means (such as a gift) during the past 24 months.

Change Is Good!!

I have met people for whom it was very difficult to admit they needed a change their life despite the fact that their life was in shambles in one way or another. They knew that there needs in their life that was going unmet, day after day, week after week, year after year. Yet, they had a problem admitting even to themselves that something very important was missing, and that they needed to undergo a drastic change in their personal life.

They feel that they are always right, that they have all the answers, when all the time, the truth of the matter is they are either afraid of change or they are not willing to pay the price for change. They constantly fight with negativity on every hand. They burn up time and energy trying to correct negative effect in their lives, when all the time they are unwilling to accept the necessary change and realizing their negative habits of thinking that is the cause. They are looking for the easy way out.

My advice would be to first, standup and at least admit it to themselves that there are changes that need to take place in their thoughts, words, and actions and in the circumstance, conditions and events in their lives and that those changes need to begin to happen right now. Remember it is through a little green sprout becomes a beautiful rose, or a chrysalis becomes a butterfly. Rain is necessary for a rainbow to appear.

All you need to do is send an email about this promotion to 8 people and you will receive an Ericsson T18 laptop.

However, if you send an email to 20 people or more you will receive an Ericsson R320 laptop.

Analysis: Here's a chain letter that doesn't even make sense on the face of it. To quote the main premise as stated in the version circulating since 2007:

The Ericsson Company is distributing free computer laptops in an attempt to match Nokia that has already done so.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but Nokia has never distributed free laptop computers to email forwarders. Nor are they ever likely to do so. Nor is Sony Ericsson.

All you need to do to qualify is to send this mail to 8 people you know. Within 2 weeks, you will receive Ericsson T18.

Sounds easy enough and tempting, too, but get this: the Ericsson T18 is a cell phone, not a computer. Moreover, it's a discontinued model. They don't sell it anymore!

But if you can send it to 20 people or more, you will receive Ericsson R320.

Again, the Ericsson R320 is a cell phone, not a computer. And discontinued, to boot!

What gives? The email above is slightly revised version of a nine-year-old hoax promising free phones to frequent forwarders. Though the phrase "computer laptops" has been substituted in the newer variant to reel in more suckers, evidently the anonymous prankster who revised the original couldn't be bothered to change the model numbers of the supposed promotional items.

The email address to which copies of the forwarded message are supposed to be sent, anna.swelung@ericsson.com, is a corruption of the address specified in the 2000 version of the hoax (anna.swelund@ericsson.com), which, of course, was never valid in the first place.


2009 update: On May 12, 2009 Sony Ericsson released the following statement in response to a revised version of the hoax:

Sony Ericsson has been made aware of an online email campaign claiming that Ericsson will give away a free laptop computer to users who forward the promotional information. The same campaign includes a photograph of the Sony Ericsson logo and mentions an Ericsson contact name and email number.

Sony Ericsson confirms that this email campaign is a hoax. In addition, Sony Ericsson confirms that the Ericsson contact name does not exist.

All competitions and promotions involving Sony Ericsson are run through official channels such as Sony Ericsson's website or Sony Ericsson's partners' websites. Please be wary of any competition or promotion that appears to come from outside of Sony Ericsson or Sony Ericsson's partners official channels. Examples of these include via spam emails or SMS.
